Watering basics

Check the soil before reaching for the watering can.

Water being poured from a brass watering can into a leafy potted plant

Step by step

  1. 1

    Check the soil

Feel the top layer and lift the pot to gauge its weight. Check deeper if the surface dries quickly.

  2. 2

    Water slowly

When the plant needs water, pour slowly and evenly until water drains from the bottom.

  3. 3

    Let it drain

Let the pot finish draining, then empty the saucer. Recheck sooner during hot weather.

Common mistake

Watering on the same day every week regardless of soil moisture.

In practice

A snake plant usually needs to dry out more between waterings than a fern.
