Repotting made simple

Give crowded roots a little more room.

Hands giving a fern root ball more room in a terracotta pot

Step by step

  1. 1

    Check the roots

Slide out the root ball and check for densely circling roots or very little potting mix left.

  2. 2

    Choose the right pot

Pick a pot one size larger with drainage holes. Add fresh mix suited to the plant.

  3. 3

    Settle it in

Set the root ball at its previous depth, fill around it gently, and water according to the plant’s needs.

Common mistake

Choosing a much larger pot, where excess mix can stay wet too long.

In practice

If a pothos has filled its pot with roots and dries unusually fast, check whether it needs to move up a size.
