Pests & leaf problems

Look closely before deciding how to respond.

Inspecting the underside of a leaf for pests with a magnifying glass

Step by step

  1. 1

    Inspect closely

Inspect leaf undersides, stems, and leaf joints for insects, sticky residue, webbing, or cottony clusters.

  2. 2

    Separate & check

Separate a plant with visible pests and inspect nearby plants.

  3. 3

    Identify & follow up

Identify the pest before choosing a treatment. Check again over the following days.

Common mistake

Treating every white patch as the same problem.

In practice

Cottony clusters at leaf joints can suggest mealybugs. Fine webbing and speckling can suggest spider mites.
