Grow vegetables from seed

Go from seed packet to sturdy seedling.

Vegetable seedlings in a seed tray beside tomato and lettuce seed packets

Step by step

  1. 1

    Sow with care

Follow the packet’s sowing depth and timing. Use clean containers with drainage and a suitable seed-starting mix.

  2. 2

    Moisture & light

Keep the mix evenly moist and give seedlings adequate light once they emerge.

  3. 3

    Move outside gradually

When seedlings are ready to move outside, increase their exposure gradually over several days.

Common mistake

Keeping seed trays soggy or crowding seedlings.

In practice

Start tomatoes in individual cells and check the packet for when to transplant them.
